Look for a book called "Introduction to Signal Processing" by
Sophocles J Orfanidis, very good textbook on these things.
The math involved isn't really that heavy, not more than high school
math. A flanger is just a modulated delay line so they are the same
thing actually (and filters too, in a way, since they also involve a
delay).
"Downmixing" is something else (a spectral operation used to bring IF
down to baseband in radio communication), I believe you're just
referring to "mixing".
