Writing m4a metadata

Am I correct that this is still not possible with any current API, either Core Audio or QuickTime?
I'm assuming that if I want to do it, it will involve my program adding QTAtoms to the file.... I'm not looking forward to going down this path, so correct me if I'm wrong.
