Thank you for your reply. If that is not possible, is it possible to perform audio level metering with the music being played in the iPod application. For example, is it possible to, at a given time, retrieve the volume at different frequency bands and the peak volume of the audio? If not, is it possible to retrieve the average power and peak power of the audio at a certain time?

Is there any way to play music located in the user's iPod library with AVAudioPlayer. I know that AVAudioPlayer either requires an NSURL to the audio or NSData of the audio; however, if I have an instance of MPMediaItem and I wish to play the song represented by the MPMediaItem, is there any way to play the song with AVAudioPlayer?
No, there is not. MPMediaItems can only be played by an instance of the MPMusicPlayerController (the iPod or Application player).
