If this was a once-in-a-blue-moon thing I could live with rebooting. But it's more frequent than that and a significant disruption to my workflow. If any of you guys have any suggestions they'd be appreciated.

My 2 cents, but have you tried to restart the coreaudiod process (using the Activity Monitor). I don't know what it does, but this is the only coreaudio related process I know, so maybe…
