Simulator is not to be trusted for audio, IMHO.  The same code will work on my laptop and iPhone OS devices, but not my tower.  A few known conflicts:

	* If you have the old FireWire iSight, disconnect it
	* Some QuickTime plugins mess up the simulator's sound processing, including Perian and LiveType.  See if moving them aside helps
	* A thread on Stack Overflow <http://stackoverflow.com/questions/302399/sound-not-working-in-iphone-simulator> suggests changing the sampling rate in Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup.
