Shame...
Apple - Please can you do something to fix this limitation?
You need to read through the previous comments, I'm not going to
reiterate them.
HDMI based
audio communication is the future. I'm sure it's not beyond Apple's
engineers to come up with a MiniDisplay+USB -> HMDI that does it
properly....(or someone else?)
seems like whoever manufactured the current interface needs to hear
back from users that it is not quite there yet.

Bill,
I'm pretty sure that there is nothing that can be done by Apple to
get the
Monoprice connector to work with multichannel.
not in its current form
There's nothing in
CoreAudio which can make the chips in the connector behave
differently.
sure - but that's not my point. These companies are making the wrong
product (in my view at least), so you telling them this might help
them to make the right product.
Looks like Monoprice have used a standard USB Audio Device with no
modification - as the Audio Midi Setup reports. It's very much the
same
thing that I get if I connect any one of a very large number of
lowcost
USB audio devices like headphones etc.
Yes, but a "standard USB Audio Device" can also support multi-channel.
The spec for this is not constrained by channels (where SPDIF is for
instance), so this is really a matter of these companies deciding that
the market only needs or will support, stereo.
I will certainly write to Monoprice to ask them to consider doing a
better
job (which would probably involved changing the firmware associated
with
the USB chip that they have).
No, my suggestion for Apple is nothing to do with software and
CoreAudio.
Rather, I would really like them to design a decent MiniDiplay+USB->
HDMI
connector. They already make MiniDisplay -> DVI connectors
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB570Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MTA4MzU1NTE#overview
.
Indeed, I've got one that even has MiniDisplay and USB (although this
appears to have been discontinued).
Sure, Apple could just hope that someone like Griffin or Monoprice
will do
it for them, but if they are serious about pushing the HDMI connector
option for multichannel sound, then I really don't see why selling an
Apple product would be such a problem.
Yes, I undertand the request and have forwarded it on. Thanks
Bill
