I purchased oth the kanex device you mention and
another made by Monoprice
(http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802&p_id=5969&seq=1&format=2
). Both only provide standard stereo 48KHz....
Not an option for multichannel, and no better
than using the standard optical link.
No, providing a full multichannel HDMI audio
interface via the USB port is something that
would require more effort than has been made so
far.

I bought a MDP -> HDMI connector before the
audio was integrated, but now I think there are
better and more options available. Haven't tried
them out though.
Not really a coreaudio issue though.
