Hmm.. that doesn't seem to be the case. By some trial&error, I finally got the device to just expose a rendering side (i.e. for sound output), and that was with an IOAudioStream with direction kIOAudioStreamDirectionOutput (which is for data entering the device).

Really confusing :(
