From what I understand, core audio cannot
decode ac3 stream. It can pass the raw ac3 stream to the hardware thought the
optical out of your machine (so other devices can decode it like an audio video
receiver). When you implement an ac3 decoder you have to pay royalty to dolby,
which apple choose not to do. I am no lawyer, but this is my understanding of it.
Maybe you should look into liba52 J Good luck

Subject: AC-3 decode in Leopard+
Hello,
Does Core Audio allow me to decode AC-3 encoded data in Leopard? I
found this page which describes the audio formats supported. It seems to
indicate that it supports ac3 in Leopard or above, but also mentions that it
could not (by default) decode AC-3 audio to PCM in Tiger.
Any clarifications here would be appreciated.
