We need to be able to generate a tone, when the transport is NOT playing.  Is this possible (using a Music Effect component)?

As a host developer, I will note that the main feature that differentiates a Music Effect AU from others is that we can feed it note events and expect something sane to happen. In all other respects, they are identical.

But in Logic, at least, it appears that there is now way to have the Render function called when the transport is stopped.  Is that true?  Is there any OTHER way to get audio to the output from a Music Effect component, without starting the transport?

If this is true, I find it very strange. Certainly within my own host, transport state makes absolutely no difference to whether or not we call render (or even whether or not we deliver note events etc.)

Sorry that this doesn't help you get an answer for Logic, which as we all know is the only OS X that matters :)
