Should clarify. Computers/PDA/Cellphones with embedded cameras

I feel compelled to point out that with respect to the camera
issue, it is your personal cameras that are prohibited, not cameras
that are property of the government. We have cameras here that are
government property and for official use only.
Yes that is true and those cameras may only be in the possession of
people with camera passes. You may not get a camera pass for a
camera embedded in a cell phone, PDA, or computer. A memo came out
on this matter, though the memo might have only mentioned the first
two items; however, we had an issue with a PDA and a laptop already.
Presumedly, if it is a government laptop that we are talking about,
then it to is for official use only too, as would be the camera
embedded in the laptop. We also have government property
teleconferencing cameras.
Teleconferencing cameras are required to be in the possession of a
person with a camera pass at all times, I had to get a camera pass
last year just to babysit a telecon camera for a class at this lab.
This requirement came down from security.
I don't see why the laptop camera would be intrinsically
different than that. You just would not be able to use it for any
unofficial purpose.
We have already dealt with that issue with security and the moment a
question was posed to Security about this issue the person with the
laptop received a request to contact the head of Security
immediately. The position Security has taken is that "no computer
with a camera embedded in it should have ever been purchased at this
lab." Since you can't purchase it...
Call Security for clarification and precise wording. They were very
clear to our people about both the PDA and the laptop. The
particular laptop was purchased a while ago for a project that used
digital cameras for documentation of change orders.
Perhaps other DOD labs aren't not enforcing the same rules or have
been reading the same rules differently, that can change in a
heartbeat. Or perhaps people at other DOD labs are not aware of the
rules, not everyone at this lab is aware of the rules or recent memos
from security.
