I agree with Basil's comments. My company built and deploys an ISR video service for the USJFCOM MAJIIC ACTD. We are deploying the video service on Xserves in DoD/IC SCIF environments. The rules Basil outlined are strictly enforced in every environment I have been around. We have enough difficulties knocking down the "its a mac" perceptions as it is. It would hinder our ability to support, deploy, and deliver on our contract if the PowerBook line eventually is only offered in a camera-equiped manner.

Worse...

There is already a regulation (that is STRICTLY enforced) that one cannot bring cameras of ANY sort into a SCIF. However, one can bring a Government-owned laptop (with wireless turned off and IR covered) into a SCIF (yes, there are rules on their use).

If there are only camera-equipment PowerBooks in the future, Apple will effectively stop all sales to many DoD and *all* IC purchasers.

This has already caused problems with cell phones. The cell phone companies, for example, were forced to continue to offer non-camera wireless phones (when they didn't want to) as DoD told them none of their future phones would qualify. (FYI... Camera phones are also banned from all DoD installations --- classified or unclassified, Government-owned or not.)

Smart or stupid --- those are the rules (and the result of breaking does not lead to a pleasant experience).

I second that. While there isn't currently a regulation at the NIH that forbids having computers, or cell phones, with built-in cameras, that's a regulation that could be added if someone decided to make a fuss about it. If you want to add cameras to the laptops, please make it an add-on option that can be left off or something external that's in the accessories box along with the power cord and telephone cable.

Rich

Last time I mentioned that iSight cameras in iMacs prevented the
purchase of iMacs at any DOD labs following the rules, someone
pointed out that we didn't have to purchase iMacs. For desktops it
is believable that there will always be a choice, I can't imagine an
iSight camera in a Mac mini or a PowerMac G5 case.

However, what about laptops. I can easily imagine iSight cameras in
all Apple laptops and why not, cost is the only issue right? Given
that 15" and 17" PowerBooks are the Mac of choice for people
converting from PC to Mac in my group, the following comment in Wired
from AppleInsider is of concern (obviously no Apple employee can
comment on the following):

"For starters, the much anticipated dual-core Intel processors will
make an appearance in the new 15-inch PowerBooks, which are set to
include built-in iSight cameras. Later, the company looks to be
planning a 13-inch widescreen iBook to augment (or possibly replace)
its existing entry-level lineup. Finally, toward the end of 2006,
Apple will roll out its Intel-based 17-inch PowerBooks, which will
also include the iSight."

True or not, I hope someone at Apple realizes that DOD Lab employees
who purchase PowerBooks at work instead of Dells, often purchase two
additional Macs for home and then eventually more for other family
members. The Unix under OS X makes PowerBooks ideal for our
technical work.

And no we can't take the camera out after purchase, we asked security.
