Reading back what I wrote, it didn't come out how I wanted :)
Video on the iPod will work out (just like you pointed out), what won't work
out is the AOL thing to offer old TV shows on the computer only.
The case in point, you hook the ipod up to your TV when you can...
I'm tired today so my sentence ran together...
Ipod video - great
AOL Video - bad
The only thing I do not like about iTunes software and video ipod is that I
cannot rip my own videos like I do music.. In order for me to convert my own
DVD collection to iPod, I have to use three programs...
1) Mac The Ripper (which is a great app, and the developer is a rebellious
hippy type which wins him over in my book) - Free
2) mpeg2stream - Free
3) Quicktime Pro (which was $30)
4) Quicktime mpeg2 plug in (which was $20).
It's also time consuming... I usually start the process at night so it's
done in the morning.. Mac The Ripper decodes and stores DVDs in about 12
minutes on a G4 (so a G5 would be a lot faster)... mpeg2stream takes about
15 minutes to de-mux the audio and video... Quicktime Pro takes about 3
hours to convert a 1.5 hour movie to ipod format.
This gets into the whole rights issue.. I have a right to backup my DVDs...
I have a right to watch them on a video device... The MPAA fights this as
hard as they can.... Here is the solution, either they quit trying to stop
us from backing up DVDs, or they give us TWO copies of each DVD so we have a
backup so we don't need to copy it.
The whole point of me buying DVDs it to:
1) have the movie forever
2) have perfect quality content
I personally have no desire to have a bootleg copy of a movie, the DVD-Rs
are not a permanent medium for one... Two, Movie collecting is a lot like
album collecting... My kids destroy DVDs, so I need a backup so they don't
destroy the original.
I know there are people who abuse this, but if they are going to rip off a
movie, they weren't going to buy it in the first place. All the MPAA does
is piss off honest people by taking our rights away.
I don't care what copy protection scheme they have, it will always be
broken... They should have learned this from the old computer days when they
tried to copy protect software. If you can watch a movie, it can be broken
that simple.
But you guys are military, I don't need to tell you that :) You make a
living at doing the "impossible" everyday :)
