Is Time Machine able to back only the changed portions of encrypted sparse disk images?
If you use a sparsebundle image then it can only backup the bands of the image that were changed since the last run. In practice though I'm not confident that a day long work session won't just touch every band anyway.
What is the reference for that as I certainly missed any official or unofficial reference to that?
Also, there have been references to 10.4 and 10.5 formats for File Vault. Since File Vault uses encrypted sparse disk images, does this apply to one or both of those?
10.4 uses encrypted sparse. 10.5 uses encrypted sparsebundle.
In practice one could study the claimed sizes for large disk images in the Time Machine database and begin to figure out some of the answers to these questions, just it's a bit tricky to take into account the total effects of the hard links for all the other files as well unless the disk images totally overwhelm everything else.
I think the OP was referring to a desire to have the TM destination archive be encrypted. Currently TM does not do that.
