I'd submit that AppleCare is a good investment for laptops.
For my last 3 (Ti PB, Al PB, MBP)
* 2 power supplies were replaced
* 1 motherboard failure (thankfully about 6 weeks before the
extended warranty ran out :-)
* 1 battery replacement (the battery in my MB Pro just went south,
and after verifying it really was a battery -failure- rather than just a
worn-out battery, they agreed to replace it. This happened within the 1
year mfr warranty, so I still have 2 more years to go on the AppleCare
for this machine.)
A related cool thing: That motherboard failure happened on-the-road. I
dropped it off at the Newport Beach Apple Store -late- Thursday evening
while in California on a trip. It was returned to the Tyson's Apple
Store late the following Tuesday afternoon. Try that with a Dell,
dude! ;-)

p.s. check out the http://www.nytimes.com front-page Apple banner ad.
Very cute, even though I despise flash animations that move out of their
own windows.
