I've got our Sales Engineer working on it as well.
My main gripe is that it's not documented anywhere. The AppleCare tech yesterday sent me a KB article, but it's for 10.4 server and only makes mention of authenticated proxies. We're in neither of those situations so to me, that document is not applicable. http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24836?viewlocale=en_US
I took a very close read of the system imaging and software update server instructions yesterday and there's no mention what-so-ever that use behind a proxy (authenticated or otherwise) is unsupported. There's not even mention of the word "proxy" anywhere.
AppleCare also stated that, "nothing has changed with SUS since 10.4 so that document should be fine." Well, obviously something changed because my 10.5 server box gets through just fine. Also, there's the option to change where the software updates are stored on your server in 10.6, which wasn't there in 10.4 or 10.5 - you had to do this with symlinks. So, yes, something has changed - and not for the better.
This whole thing would be solved if 10.5 Server could dole out updates to 10.6 clients. I really don't get that crippling of the product. It's just Apache doling out updates...
