Remember that back in about 2000 or so, Symantec's malware program
opened up a big security hole in the Mac while the company
simultaneously argued the Mac was unsecure. I'm sure it was part of the
grand plan to make the assertion true. :-)
But seriously, I have dealt with several colleagues' Macs that had
significant performance problems -- read very slow. After uninstalling
Symantec software, the machine zipped right along. Perhaps the company
has solved those problems, but I'm skeptical.

Yes :)
Symantec's way of eliminating viruses is by way of disabling the mac
altogether.
Symantec causes more problems than it could ever fix.
