Although I frequently hear that from a wide range of people, I've had it
on all the MACs here for many years, and have not observed any problems
with it, in recent years.

Yes :)
Symantec's way of eliminating viruses is by way of disabling the mac
altogether.
Symantec causes more problems than it could ever fix.
