As of Symantec AntiVirus 10.1.1, performance is abysmal with autoprotect
enabled; if you're compiling something, it's best to leave at least one core
free to run SAV.
In addition, SMac Client crashes ~10 times whenever I reboot my system (Mac
Pro, 8 core 2.8, 10.5.8). I also had to disable the scan-on-mount feature,
since the scheduledScanner process would regularly crash or start hogging
100% CPU after mounting an external volume. Console logged a malloc error
that looked like a buffer overrun or use-after-free:
07/17/09 13:41:18 scheduledScanner[7169] scheduledScanner(7169,0xb009b000)
malloc: *** error for object 0x80801800: incorrect checksum for freed object
- object was probably modified after being freed.
*** set a breakpoint in malloc_error_break to debug
So from a user point of view, I have low confidence that my system is more
secure with Symantec products installed. But at least it meets some
requirement.
(opinions mine, not those of my employer, of course)
