A summary I sent out to my organization (yes, it has 3G, and while it has no traditional "phone", you can of course use any and all VOIP apps with this):
Today, Apple introduced its long awaited tablet computer, the iPad. The main thing that sets the iPod apart from myriad other attempts at tablets is that it doesn't try to shoehorn a desktop-class OS onto a tablet form-factor device, and instead makes the user experience with single, focused tasks, like browsing the web, checking email, viewing media, playing games, reading books, or otherwise interacting with content very elegant. Like Jef Raskin's original idea that a computing device should be more like an appliance (such as a toaster) instead of a computer, the iPad interface adapts to the task or function at hand.
In summary, it's carving out what Apple believes the tablet/netbook market should be; namely, a device that performs tasks between a mobile phone and a full size laptop and/or desktop computer running a desktop OS, at least as well or better.
A summary of the specs:
0.5" thick
1.5 pounds
9.7" IPS display <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TFT_LCD#In-plane_switching_.28IPS.29>
Full capacitive multitouch
1 GHz Apple (PA Semi) A4 CPU
16-64 GB Flash storage
Bluetooth 2.1+EDR
Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n
Accelerometer
Digital compass
Speaker
Microphone
30-pin (iPod dock) connector
1/8" headphone jack
10 hours battery life (1 month standby)

The iPad runs iPhone OS (the OS that runs on the iPhone, iPod touch, and now the iPad). It runs all existing iPhone and iPod touch applications unmodified, but developers can take advantage of new capabilities and the screen size of the iPad.
Content is king on the iPad: Apple has deals with a number of major book publishers, and a new iBook store, which makes thousands of books available for the iPad, in addition to rich content from providers like the New York Times. As Jobs noted during the presentation, Apple is standing on the shoulders of the Amazon Kindle in this realm.
There is a new version of the iWork suite optimized for the iPad, priced at $9.99/each. There is an external dock with a full size keyboard, and a number of other accessories.
There is a version with only Wi-Fi, and a version with Wi-Fi and 3G. The 3G is no contract, and all units are unlocked GSM. 3G service is through AT&T in the US, and is $14.99/mo for 250MB/mo, or $29.99/mo for unlimited. Again, the 3G is no contract, and all 3G iPads are unlocked and can be used with any GSM microSIM (standard carrier data rates apply if used outside of the "normal" AT&T iPad plan).
