It has wep, wpa, etc encryption, I'd have to look if it has IPSec. But
that's why I am not getting the 3G ipad. I'll stick with my mifi.

If MiFi is IPsec capable, I could certainly see doing that.
Several years ago USAF discussed supporting mobile user access in a
similar fashion--the user would take along a wifi-capable router
with IPsec support that would join a public wired or WiFi network
(e.g., at a hotel) and automatically establish a VPN tunnel back to
home base. This had the advantages of near-zero configuration for
the end user, and the ability to manage the remote machine as if it
were still connected at home.
The idea floundered on cost and availability of suitable commercial
products, and the unfortunate tendency of public networks to use
captive-portal authorization, NAT, and transparent network proxies--
all of which made operations much more complex for the user. I
could handle it, but could Airman Snuffy?

Someone mentioned using Verizon's MiFi. How would that work?
Wouldn't
that be a better way to go for DoD, enabling something like 4 wifi
connections per device? I could imagine that being a great thing in
classrooms and the Field if it worked as I think it does.

Was hoping for a tethering plan with my iPhone. Why can't I use my
iPhone as a modem for laptop/iPad?
Mainly because AT&T says no. There's more money in selling you an
additional data plan (moreson because that means they collect a
complete second set of fees to accrue interest on in the tax
escrow account).

Also, interface issues with books need some work for science,
medicine>and gov users. Need to be able to highlight among other
fundamentals. Can you embed markup in documents to go to TOC or
references?

Sooooo....What do you all think?! Is it more likely than an
