I do OK as long as I keep my phone set to Edge. Terrible 3G experience, OK Edge experience.
Since I have *not* heard the same level of visceral complaints about iPhone connectivity in other countries (certainly there are some, but not to the same extent), I sometimes wonder that for 3G if CDMA is just an inherently better technology than GSM. In other words, most other countries do not have an opportunity to experience CDMA, so they cannot compare their GSM experience to an equivalent of Verizon. GSM maybe the global standard, but CDMA may be the better technology.
Or maybe the radios that AT&T buys for their cell towers just have a crappy implementation of 3G (e.g., the recently revealed bug crippling 3G HSUPA performance in some radios).
Personally, not being able to talk to someone doesn't bother me, but I do want my texting, email, and other data services.
Todd
