I don't think Apple's afraid of lawsuits over conjecture and rumor. Don't forget the sky is only falling here on about five people. Such is the state of journalism that this has been conflated from a minor problem for two and a half people who live in one of the many AT&T dead zones into SHARK ATTACK SUMMER 2010: Don't dare take a shower.
But to this point, I'd say two things. First, it's just a phone. One problem with one product is hardly going to bring Apple to its knees. Its stock is almost $300 per share, it's the third largest company on earth and there are these other products floating around out there called the Mac, the iPad, the iPod, et al. Second, we wouldn't be talking about this if it were just another Android phone. That Apple still commands this sort of attention speaks to how important the company will continue to be to the future of technology long after we're guffawing about these unnecessary histrionics roiling the world as it clutches its pearls and staggers toward its swooning couch. Over a loss of signal brought about by touching an antenna.
The absurdity of it all is itself worthy of study. We should be concerned when something like this happens to Apple and the world yawns. With this particular problem, once it's fixed, the only thing anyone will have to show for it is the billions of dollars of free publicity it's generated for Apple. The world will turn AGAIN to Cupertino tomorrow to hear a sermon delivered from on high about a product that was released a month ago.
What other company can do that?
