Maybe the multiple pins in the plug allow it to be more robust/easier to
expand its functionality. Ie attach a robotic arm to your iPhone so that
I can pull itself out of your pocket whenever you have a call then set
itself on your shoulder so you could answer the call automatically
(HANDS FREE). I found this site with the pinout layout, this may give
you a better idea why apple prefers a 30 pin connector opposed to usb
connector.

Crazy Thought
So I've been having a rough time the last couple of weeks, I haven't
slept well and I'm hungry and it's the end of the day for me. All of
which explains this crazy thought: Why can't an Iphone have a USB port
instead of the charging slot it has now? Or why can't it be extended
that itty bitty more in length to do it?
Okay. I'm going home. But just thought I'd give you something crazy to
think about when you go to bed. Call it a bachelor's revenge. >;o)
