Apple's discontinuance of XServe means we're moving a major
application from Mac OS X to Linux.
Neither the Mac Pro, nor the Mac Mini, provide several critical
features we need:
- LOM
Not available on Mac Pro or Mac Mini.
- Dual power supplies
Not available on Mac Pro or Mac Mini.
- ECC RAM
Available on Mac Pro.
Not available on Mac Mini.
- Rack mount kits with controlled airflow, and slide rails
Modern data center designs require racks and servers which control
airflow, so that all the cool air goes through the equipment, not
around the equipment. Servers need to be serviceable from the front
via slide rails.
Mac Pro rack mount kits I've found are missing one or both of these
features (Redco, KAE, Cadlock).
Mac Mini rack mount kits I've found are missing both of these
features, except for this one:

- Reasonable rack space requirements
12U rack space required for two Mac Pros vs 2U rack space for two
XServes (or any other 1U server).
Mac Pros are not six times more powerful than XServes.
Gaggles of Mac Minis with slower processors, no ECC RAM, limited
RAM expansion, and no slots do not add up to one Xserve.
Some of these features might not be important to you. They are to me,
and probably to many others.
