Every single one of these issues is utterly moot if Mac OS X Server can be virtualized in existing virtual infrastructure.
Granted, the ability to virtualize Mac OS X Server on non-Apple hardware has not been announced, but it is a possibility. It would be unlikely that any license changes would be made midstream for Mac OS X Server 10.6.x, since there are also technical details that would need to be resolved for any future virtualization-on-non-Apple-hardware scenarios. A Lion Server license change doesn't magically "open the floodgates" on Lion non-Server. It's still a licensing issue, and a properly-priced Lion Server for virtual environments wouldn't hurt Lion or anything else. Since Apple doesn't talk about future products, we are left in an uncomfortable position of knowing little beyond the fact that the Xserve is discontinued.
Aside from HPC and high-density computing needs, for environments that already have a well-developed virtualization infrastructure, there is NO REASON to run Mac OS X Server on Xserve. If a virtualization path is forthcoming, I would be quite glad to never have to deal with an Xserve again, and it would serve the vast majority of our needs well if not better than ever before.
