Convertible designs have two choices: they can use the touchscreen in both tablet and laptop configurations, or they can use a separate trackpad/joystick in laptop configuration and only use the touchscreen in tablet configuration. Extant (and past) convertibles on the market rely pretty much exclusively on the latter design. I conjecture that this is, at least in part, because *in laptop configuration* using the touchscreen--which qualifies as a vertical touchscreen--is too difficult and uncomfortable for anything longer than a few minutes.
