Thanks for the information.
I've discovered the same thing. If you plug the network dongle in
last, it works. Also, if you unplug the network and replug it after
it disappears, it also works fine.
This isn't really a great solution for me because I use my PIV card to
login to apps through vmware view. Unplugging and replugging the
network throughout the day is the band-aid fix, but not the real one.
The Apple article is an interesting one, although I don't believe it
to be what the problem is. Everything worked fine when running on
Linux Mint without OSX even on the drive. I didn't try to install
Windows, but I would guess that Windows would recognize things the
same as Linux was able to. Now if Linux had the same issues as OSX
with the networking dongle and the SC reader, I would point it at a
hardware problem. It doesn't really seem to be the case.
I've since submitted a bug request to Apple. I don't know where it
will go, but I will be pleased if Apple can fix this. It seems like
there's a number of us having this issue and there's no resolution
yet. In Apple's defense, I'm not sure they new it was an issue, as I
could not have found anybody with the same problem through google.
Thanks all for the responses and feedback. It gives me hope that
there may be a fix since I'm not the only one with this problem.

I have several colleagues suffering the same challenges and I have found that in nearly every case, the solution is to remove all USB devices/connections - and then re-connect them ensuring that the Ethernet dongle is the last to be connected. This may not work with certain devices in the mix (iPod, iPhone etc.) but in situations involving the SCR reader and Ethernet dongle only this has been the "solution"
