I also can confirm that the problem has existed for some time. I think I first saw it on the first Mac Airs and 10.6.x.
The only thing I'll add is the real complication we saw was that the first Airs had only one USB port and you needed a network connection to attempt PKINIT so when having to choose between a USB Reader and or a USB Network adapter. But both are needed. We tried powered USB hubs and the Apple USB network device would disappear when the reader was connected. Never figured out why, but there is no logical reason it should have happened if there was not some sort of bug, especially since the hubs were powered in this case.
