I've tried this, and it doesn't work. I have a Rosewill powered 4
port HUB and it doesn't make a difference.
I also just posted something, but don't think I replied to all. Since
I was formatting the drive anyways, I tried Linux Mint. I downloaded
the OpenSC driver package (so it would recognize my PIV card). I was
able to use the networking dongle and plug/unplug the smartcard reader
without loosing my networking connection. So, on Linux, everything
works great. In OSX, I can't say the same.
This leads me to believe that it has to be a problem with OSX. I do
not know when this happened, but the "Android File Transfer" broke
networking after the 10.7.4 update, according to the post here....
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3950124?start=0&tstart=0
Additionally, if I unload the networking kernel extensions with this...
$ sudo kextunload
/System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBEthernet.kext
$ sudo kextload
/System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBEthernet.kext
The USB Ethernet doesn't load back up until I physically unplug the
USB connection. If I put the smart card reader in, break the
networking from this, and then try the kextunload, OSX crashes and
needs to be rebooted.
