One reason is the liability of the connection. The 30 pin connector was good but it could fail easier than a tongue connector. Further it was wide to carry the USB, audio, firewire, etc. But the main reason, the width. The current connector dictates the depth of the device. The "wow we could do that except the 30 pin connector is too thick" was probably heard one too many times at 1 Infinite Loop. I would wager that the thickness of the iPod was restricted to the thickness of this cable.
Lastly, it logically stands to reason that the 30 pin connector (and associated cable) was more expensive to produce and all that expense was being wasted in long unused features and pins.
More improvement than any kind of profit.

Peter,
Thanks, I didn't notice that until now. Any card reader that isn't
a "case" design would pretty much depend on that connection being
sturdy enough to hold a reader and rugged enough to not snap off
with a little pressure. Looking closer, I do see that it does look
like it might be just that.
My only other complaint:
$30 for a Lightning-to-30 adapter seems a bit steep, though not
unexpected.

Jim,
Look
closely at the image of the connector in the keynote and you'll
see indentations. These should actually hold the plug in the
phone better than the spring clip of the 30-pin. As for grabbing
it, I think it will work better because it has less real-estate
to break.

My only question is about the stability/ruggedness of the
"Lightning" connector. Though I understand it and think
it's pretty cool, the 30-pin had a lot more real estate to
'grab' with.
