In the immortal words of Emily Litella, "Never mind!"
When I booted up another Core 2 Duo machine of the same era and then App Store, the link for "Free Mavericks" showed up under Updates. When I pressed the button, though, I got the message, "Mavericks cannot be installed on this machine." (That's a real shame, Apple should have supported Mavericks on Core 2 Duo 'or better'.)
It is frustrating that App Store.app showed me an update that I couldn't run.
