Thanks Eric. I do have the updates. The earlier update to which you're referring was only for specific models (particularly MacBook Pros) and I'm running a Mac Pro so it wasn't able to be installed...

I don't know for sure, but I had the same issue and there was a recent 10.6 update that fixed some issues with disk drivers or ATA or something. If you are running Snow Leopard, you should make sure you have 10.6.2 installed (it fixed it for me).
