Hi,
I'm not sure, but for me it sounds like a disk problem, anyways, maybe the
system logs some info...
right after you experience the problem try open terminal,
navigate to /var/log, find the latest modified files, and maybe there are
further information to enlighten you ;)
Sample:
cd /var/log
ls -lart
less system.log (or any other file just modified)
