That's a pretty severe problem. The only way to resolve it would be to reinstall your system -- it looks as if your SoftwareUpdate application and Install.framework are mismatched -- hence the freeze on the "selector not recognized" exception.

How did your machine get into this state?

Is there anything to be done to rectify this short of
reinstalling the
system? Maybe I could reinstall the Install.app?

My version is Mac OS X 10.4.7
