Does MAC OS X support PPPoA?
if yes, where isthe info about it burried?
if no, what does it take for an Ethernet driver to support it?

In OS9 and OSX, I have two drivers - one ethernet, one serial. The ATM stuff is the same, just the interface to the OS is different. You use regular PPP (Remote Access on 9, Internet Connect on X) to connect.

For the serial part, I started with AppleUSBCDCDriver on OSX. I use the same driver code with a few #ifdefs.

This works for me, YMMV.
