Except that in the menu bar the Airport symbol shows exactly whether it
is dialing, connected, disconnecting or not connected. So you DO have the
info in this special case (which is a real reason to buy the Airport Base
Station and not some other (cheaper) WLAN base).
There should be a way to pass this information to apps wanting to phone
home.

Nope, the checkbox is off.
I'll try Little Snitch (www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch) first and a
packet trace if this doesn't succeed and report my findings...
