If I was in your position I would use libcurl. It's very well
exercised for both HTTP and FTP, and you can compile a recent version
directly into your product if the version included in 10.2 is not
sufficient.
If by chance you are doing this in Cocoa then you might look at
CURLHandle from karelia.com.
