A quick followup to my own post: in lieu of Stevens (which is
probably the best reference there is; the 3rd ed is reportedly as
good as the 2nd, although written/modified by others), there is
Beej's Guide to Network Programming, which gets good reviews from
those who have read it:

Beej does have a very good guide on sockets, but it definitely
doesn't cover what's being talked about in this thread. Beej's guide
may be useful for learning some basic network terminology and the
sockets API, but don't waste your time if you're looking for anything
more than that.
