Agreed. In particular, almost always when someone wants to get their 'outside' IP address, it's to let other people on the outside find and communicate with them; but to do that you also need to "punch a hole" in the NAT to get a public port to listen to. And that is actually the main purpose of the port-mapping API in dns_sd.h; the mechanism to just get your IP address is just a degenerate case where you set up a null port mapping.
(Then there's also the question of how you communicate that IP address to people, which usually involves an external protocol like email or XMPP, or a relay server of some kind, or a P2P mesh network...)
