One more thing, Joel. The revised 10.6.5 update now allows external accounts to be on a partition formatted for FAT. That might be an option to test and see if that is more reliable (in terms of defragging on the FAT partition) when compared to having HFS/FAT on the same physical media.

I've searched quite a bit on this and cannot find a Mac OS X - based solution to repair FAT partition issues. There are obviously solutions on Windows, and maybe this will be one thing that has to be done within a Windows VM or running natively. Anybody else have personal experience with this?

Hi all, we are requiring students to use
their external Hard Drive for their Home folder, problem is, Windows (no
surprise there). Several of the students have windows machines where they do
homework so we are forced to partition the Hard Drive to two partitions, one is
FAT and the other is MAC OS Extended. Here is the problem I am starting to see
the FAT partition having issues where I need to do data recovery or maintenance
such as defrag ect. What tool is recommended to perform advance disk repair and
recovery that works well with Mac OS X and covers FAT format? I want to get
more bang for my bucks as my supervisor would say. Thanks

Was very interested to see the Xserve feedback page get updated today
(or sometime this weekend). If you could take 1-3 minutes of your day and
submit this info, it will really help shape the message from education
regarding what you need in a server. Most of all, it helps communicate to Apple
what you use your Apple servers for today. The decision makers really do
capture and read this feedback, so if your message is all about virtualization
or other needs, then put that in the comments section in addition to the other
data they're asking for.

I read about this during lunch on Friday and was a bit surprised.
Thought for a second that it might have been some sort of Friday joke.
Is there any chance that the Xserve line is getting retired for a better
rack-mounted Apple server solution in the near future? I definitely love the
power, flexibility, and expandability of the Mac Pro, but I honestly don’t see
it fitting nicely (even side-ways) into a server rack with its size and weight
of 40+ pounds.
If there are no foreseeable future plans for a rack-mounted server solution, I
hope that Apple would be willing to consider opening up Mac OS X Server so that
it might be installed / supported on other Intel Xeon-based servers from other
vendors—or better yet, a scalable blade server setup running VMware. :)
Have a great weekend,
Brian

A whole day goes by and nobody posts about the discontinuation of the
Xserve? The other listserves are lit up with traffic about it, and I'm happy
that you all have more important things to do :-)
In all seriousness, this was very surprising news for me to wake up to
today. Here is Apple's official response regarding the Xserve.
"Apple remains committed to the development of server products,
services and technologies. Apple continues to offer Mac OS X Server software,
Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server, and starting today a new configuration of
Mac Pro with Snow Leopard Server. Today's announcement does not impact the
future of Xsan or server software on Mac OS X."
I'm sure questions along these lines have crossed your mind at some
point today:
- What about a hardware option with LOM (Lights-out Management) and
dual power supplies?
- Will there continue to be an Apple-specific Promise RAID chassis?
- Are there plans to allow Mac OS X Server to live on non-Apple
hardware, either natively or virtualized?
- Was Apple selling more Mac Pros and Mac Minis for servers in the
first place?
- Will there be a service parts kit for the Mac Pro?
- Will there be support for side-oriented mounting of the Mac Pro?
- Are there third party rack mounting options for the Mac Pro? Mac Mini?
- Will Apple be 'outsourcing' to a 3rd party server solution - ie
Promise strategy?
- Will we see a preview of server services in 10.7?
My answer to all of these questions, embarrassing as it is, is "I
don't know." We are still gathering facts, and will have more messaging
and direction soon. As soon as I have it, I will share it on this list with all
of you. Please feel free to send me any feedback that you have. If you do so,
also submit your feedback to apple.com/feedback,
as that has significant impact as well.
Thanks, and have a great weekend.
