Thanks, Kellie. I do appreciate your opinion. I'm not trying to be argumentative here (and not pretending to be a legal expert), but the law was not changed in February; it only passed the House. Until it passes the Senate, it's not finished with the legal process. It may well be a rubber stamp in the Senate, but I'm not willing to risk our district's reputation on a few more months of inconvenience. I don't see this as a gray area. Sorry for taking the list a bit off-topic, but I'm done now.
Either way, DNS-based filtering has its up and down sides, but it would be a great option for us. If we choose to do device-level filtering when we have a choice, having students able to use wireless in public libraries, coffee shops, etc. would be awesome! Crossing my fingers that this will be a future functionality. -Erik

Hi, Erik,
We asked the same question (is the current language still in effect? Why does the bill still reflect the device filtering language?). Here's the answer we got:
We have also successfully eliminated the device level filtering language. The CDE cleanup bill often has many changes included and is not typically approved until May. But it is approved "en mass".
Line 16 - implementation date amended to 12-31-2013
Line 18 - language deleted from sentence.
So, it looks like while the language has been successfully struck as of February, the language on the books will reflect that in May. Ultimately, though, it doesn't change your original request, which was for a Global DNS option. Regardless of where we land with the CDE, I still think this is a good feature request as we move forward with 1:1 initiatives.
