Thanks for the feedback (and clarification about enabling supervision in prepare mode) Jonathan.
Today, in prepare mode, when you enable supervision, AC will force the newest version of the iOS that the device supports.

From what I’ve read it sounds like 1.4 is the same as 1.3.1 in this case which certainly causes a significant issue for not being able to supervise iPads now. Fortunately the bulk of our iPads made it on AC before iOS 7 came out, but now I’m in a bind here… We have about 300 iPads to manage.

I understand iOS devices are meant to be managed directly by the user, but that’s only the case with individual consumers unlike us educational institutions.

We deleted the ipsw file and it worked fine. However, when trying to prepare the device, the first thing it does is want to update to iOS 7 which it can’t because we blocked themesu.apple.com address. As a result, it cannot prepare the device.

I need to supervise devices w/out having to update them, but can’t because it’s set by default to “when update is available,” and even then the option is greyed out, but still goes to update the device first thing.

If you go into a profile, in the General section, scroll down to "Security." If you choose "Never" or "With Authorization," it will prevent profile removal. In our district, we normally recommend "With Authorization" so we can remove a profile with a password if it's causing a problem syncing with Configurator. Hope I understood the discussion on that correctly in your second paragraph.
