[newbie] General question about WO/Java Client

  • Subject: [newbie] General question about WO/Java Client

Hello,

I have to consider WO for a bigger (~24 man-months on traditional
calculation) development project. Let me give you some details:

a) The development is on Windows and Mac OS X
b) The server runs on Linux with a MySQL (or maybe another database)
c) Parts of the application should run on Linux and Windows PC's as a Java
Client.
d) Other parts running as a Web application

So far so good - I think this is for what WO is build for :-)
Linux is currently not officially supported, but I found some resources on
the web with a detailed description, how it works.

But anyway, some questions are still open for me:

a) I have WO 5.0 installed on a PB 550/768 MB RAM and started some of the
Java-Client examples delivered with WO. But it is extremley slow! I am
running Java 1.4.1. I am not able to test this on Windows or Linux. Was up
on these machines with performance (I heard about some rumors with a pretty
much metter performance)? What can I do, to increase the performance on Mac
OS X?

b) Is the translation of both, the Java Client and the Web Application, as
easy as development in Obective-C using the PB/IB (I am ObjC developer)?

c) Is it possible (without bigger problems) to move the server from Linux to
another (maybe SUN, maybe HP) machine?

d) I read some nice things about Direct2Java and Direct2Web. Are there some
more websites out there, where I can get more information? Maybe some
examples? I already read the Apple-Docs. I mean some more objective, from
other guys.

e) I mentioned the timeframe (~24 MM). How much time will I save, when I use
WO as the development and deployment tool? Is it realistic, when I say, that
the development of a DB-structure will take about 3 month. After that, a
stupid prototype (without any business-logic) will take 1-2 weeks (using
Direct2Java)?

I know, as long as I don't devliver more detailed information, it is very
hard to answer... but I stand under a NDA. I can say only the following; the
application will be a highly specialized commerce system with a web and a
"native" interface.

Many thanks for your answers in advance!
Frank Blome
