Newbie WO person here too, so I'll only answer what I've been working on.

Imho, it's a LOT faster than developing anything in other ways. I've done a fair amount of work on other kinds of web apps.

a) The development is on Windows and Mac OS X

That's doable.

b) The server runs on Linux with a MySQL (or maybe another database)

The MySql is the easy part. WO supports several common databases, but, if you need something that covers more of the ANSI SQL spec than MySQL does, you might want to think about another database.

c) Is it possible (without bigger problems) to move the server from Linux to
another (maybe SUN, maybe HP) machine?

Yes. Right now, Linux is not listed as an official deployment platform.

Official deployment platforms are Solaris, MacOS X Server and Windows 2000.
Official development platforms are MacOS X and Windows 2000.

There are the following URLs for getting WO 5 to run on Linux, but they may not work for the current WO 5.2.1

Other specs are here: http://www.apple.com/webobjects/specs.html

d) I read some nice things about Direct2Java and Direct2Web. Are there some
more websites out there, where I can get more information? Maybe some
examples? I already read the Apple-Docs. I mean some more objective, from
other guys.

The number of good examples for newbies is really sparse and most of them are rather clunky imho.

e) I mentioned the timeframe (~24 MM). How much time will I save, when I use
WO as the development and deployment tool? Is it realistic, when I say, that
the development of a DB-structure will take about 3 month. After that, a
stupid prototype (without any business-logic) will take 1-2 weeks (using
Direct2Java)?

Suffice to say that, without having done serious work on WO before (but some small Cocoa projects), I was able to get a skeleton app up and running in a few hours.

A DB structure is largely a political rather than a technical problem. I have the full DB for my app designed (took me only a couple of hours), though it's not all implemented.

But, if the DB structure is complex enough to require 3 months, I'd suggest that likely you want something other than MySQL.
