Hi,
we are looking to add a second server running WebObjects, by converting
an older desktop system to this task. I looked at the OS X Server
(Jaguar) box in our local Apple store, and it said it came with a
deployment license for WebObjects. Great. Though it was WebObjects 5.1
and we are using 5.2.
Since, if I remember correctly, Jaguar came out before WO 5.2, it does
not seem unreasonable that Jaguar Server boxes were initially put
together with WO 5.1. It's now 5 months since WO 5.2 shipped, and I
would have hoped that Apple would have rev'd the contents of the box as
opportunity arose. So our local Apple store just has some old boxes
left and if I order from Apple online, it will come with 5.2?
This raises some interesting questions, for future budgeting and
planning. Presumably OS X Server 10.1 came with WO 5. If we had bought
that and then Jaguar and WO 5.2 ship, were we expected to buy (since
there were no upgrade pricing for either Server or WO) a new copy of
Server and a new copy of WO (including both development and deployment
licenses)? Perhaps other companies do maintain a 1:1 ratio of
developers to servers? Either route, things are beginning to sound
expensive. Yes, I believe we can be more productive with WO than plain
J2EE, but that doesn't mean we have $1,200 to pay out every year for
each server to upgrade the core server software.
In researching this, I was reminded of the Apple Maintenance Program -
Apple Store says this is available for 1-9 servers, though it does not
offer such a product to order. Anyway, the obvious question is, does
this include updates to software bundled with OS X Server, such as WO?
I'm not sure OS X Client and a copy of WO would really be that much
cheaper in this case - if we were just using J2EE then everything we
needed would be available for download, but since we are using WO, a
consistent bundling of Server and WO would seem much more attractive.
I would be grateful for any insights anyone on the list might have.
Colin
