I would recommend against that unless you're absolutely sure that all you will ever do is create CRUD apps. Although powerful technology, D2W is only really fully comprehensible in the context of an understanding of basic WO. I would suggest concentrating on the fundamentals for a while before getting distracted by the rules > engine.

I found it interesting that the Java Client docs recommend in no uncertain terms starting all projects with D2J, while the Web Applications docs recommend starting with an honest to God web application, and using D2W only if your application calls for it.
I do not know the system well enough to have an informed opinion, but we are pretty impressed with what D2W has delivered thus far. Given that the app is a query - summary - detail app at heart, D2W is tailor made for it.

Creating an application and learning WebObjects are entirely different matters.

The original post asked, "Anyone got any ideas for good places to start for newbies?" WebObjects "Classic" is a large framework to understand just by itself. I would suggest that it is well nigh impossible to understand, and customise, a DirectToWeb application without understanding WebObjects first...

Very true. Even after having gone through the example set for Web Applications and for D2W, I still find the D2W tools a tad confusing. Neat, though.

A major point of contention for many people I have talked with is the use of Foundation, rather than java.util, objects. I can see why they did it, but it causes a bit of torque to new users. (Not that I have ever seen permanent harm resulting from learning a new framework.)

Is it true that you have a WO book coming out?

A lot of people seem to have been asking me this recently. <sigh>

Thanks for the clarification.
