Having had a quick look at sendmail (search for 'sendmail' in google and you
should find everything you need to know) it does appear to transport mail
directly to destination hosts. That being the case, if you set it up
correctly with relaying turned off (to ensure that no one ELSE can send mail
via your machine) you should be able to use it to send mail wherever you
want.
You will also find some info on how to switch it on (and a couple of useful
tips) in the Mac OS X Server 'Mac Help' in the Finder.
That way you won't have to go via your local mail server behind the firewall
at all. However I have no idea what kind of interface it has to tell you
whether it has sent the mail/ if it was able to send it directly etc.
