While Apple is not being at all forthcoming on this issue, the
_impression_ I get from watching what Apple does, participating in WO
communities, attending the last WWDC, etc.... this is just an
impression, I don't work for Apple, I have no insider information,
but the impression I get is....
Apple is NEVER going to update the WO dev tools on Windows. Never.
And presumably, eventually, they will officially stop supporting
them. Yes, this is somewhat annoying. The reason I started
developing on Windows in the _first_ place was becuase at the time I
started using WO, the Windows dev tools were _better_ supported than
the Mac dev tools. There was even a time around 4.5, if memory
serves, that there were no dev tools for Mac, you _had_ to use
Windows!
Recently, me and my small team of developers here just switched to
developing on Mac OSX. Because, as I see the writing on the wall,
Apple is barely supporting the Windows dev tools, and this isn't
going to change any time soon. Just my impression. Which was
strengthened from attending the WWDC and talking to Apple engineers
there---not that they gave me any insider information, not that they
neccesarily know Apple's strategy here any better than WE do, but I
nevertheless came back from WWDC with the distinct feeling that I
ought to switch us to OSX as soon as possible. (for development; we
continue to deploy on Solaris).

I have a very simple question indeed, and non so hard that you can
not answer. I have a Mac which I love dearly and could not do
without in the bank of computers I utilise for development, however,
the mere nature of what we all do with regards to the world wide web
predominetly requires a great deal of checking from a PC type
platform, therefore I say (in my case) I may as well develop on a PC
type platform. For me it's the scurge of all Apple lovers, Windows,
I'm afraid. I use this patform because a Mac can convert PC objects
into it's BIG ENDIAN state whereas Mac objects can not be converted
to a PC in it's LITTLE ENDIAN state.
This isn't the only reason I develop on a PC, I'm forced to by the
hosting company I use, it's generally a case of pricing - I don't
know about now as technology moves on so fast, but I'm talking as if
this were a few years ago... - using PC or Unix servers is offered
far cheaper than that of a G4 or G5 machine sitting in a data
centre. Furthermore, server administrators are usally Unix trained
and look at a Mac with some sort of contempt so don't want to know
about administering it, they'd rather leave the whole process up to
you, configuring, processing, administering, everything... if it
breakes down they'll reboot it and that's about it, at least that's
how I've experienced it. Oh don't get me wrong, I know you can
develop on a Mac and deploy on a Solaris (Unix type) or Windows
platform, but there are certain things a Mac does that a PC just
can't seem to get it's head around and there lies a tiny little
problem that can give the illusion of an elevated crisis on a PC or
a PC based browser - again even the Mac and PC browsers of the same
model such as Internet Explorer are different.
Anyhow, that's not the real issue, what I'd like to know is when is
Apple actually going to update the PC version of WebObjects
Applications like the EOModeller App, more importantly the
ProjectBuilder App, generally the whole of the PC based version of
WebObjects... can I get and answer to this? PLEASE... It's been
asked enough times without answer. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE let us
know.
Forgive me if I've gone on, waffled about nonsense or anything of
the like, I just want to know.
Yours faithfully
Jonathan Fleming

ill-fated Windows User
Ps.
If Apple hadn't got themselves into the finacial trouble they did
all those years ago when Bill Gates bought into Steve Jobs' company
to save it and thus getting his hands on the formula that drove the
Apple Mac file sytem, Windows '95' would not be here nor any of the
subsequent Windows systems and Apple could have had a real shot at
cornering the market such as Gates did with Windows.
What a difference that would have made in making a difference.
...It all started with an Apple
