RuleEditor doesn't look that complex. It already is a Cocoa/YellowBox app. Maybe someone should rewrite it as a new Cocoa app? I'll volunteer myself if there's interest. Perhaps Apple would be nice enough to open up the code?

Ashley,

Nope, you're not missing anything. You are exactly right. This tool was thrown together quickly and I don't believe that anyone ever intended for it to be used so extensively. It's just one of those things that happen. The entire rule system was originally intended to be transparent to the user so not much effort was put into the tools for editing the rules.

It repeatedly tells me that the file I am editing has changed on disk
since it was last opened, when no app is running that would come
anywhere near the file. I suspect it is just that I saved the file and
it didn't notice :-(
The cause of this problem is that the method that saves rules causes the rules to be sorted. The RuleEditor is completely unaware of this. As far as I know there is no way for the rule system to notify RuleEditor of this behavior, so the only way to fix it would be to add some functionality into the rule system to provide some sort of notification. I don't think we'll see any improvements here any time soon so we just have to live with this issue.

The workaround is to save, then immediately close the rule file, then reopen it to make more changes. Or just make all the changes you want then save and close.

If one deletes rules the Master-Slave display gets out of synch,
partially it seems, the lefthand side gets updated to the newly selected
rule but the righthand side doesn't until you click on another rule and
back to the rule.

Yes there are definitely screen update issues. Enough said about that.

There seems to be no way to sort the list of rules, the columns don't
remember their sizes, and the Filter dialog is confusing, clunky and not
expandable.
All quite true.

I would file a bug report or two or three but this is so obviously poor
Apple must know about it.
Good luck and yes they do know about it.

Basically RuleEditor is a hack tool never intended to be a developer tool. Maybe we'll see some improvement to it one day, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Is RuleEditor the clumiest piece of developer software around or am I
doing something wrong?

I guess it's just the lowest of low priorities.

Or am I missing something?

Now I feel a little better.

Cheers,
Ashley.
